Community Helpers
The Community Helper Program helps identify and train Alberta youth and young adults ages 12-30, as well as adults who support this age group (teachers, coaches, employers, etc.) The program provides opportunities to strengthen support skills and learn more about mental health issues and suicide prevention. It enhances programs that reduce the risk of suicide and encourages youth and young adults to ask for help when they need it.
The Community Helpers Training is best suited for those not currently working in the mental health field but are interested in mental health support and suicide prevention.
In order to access this training, you must be a resident in southeastern Alberta.
To receive a certificate, you must attend all dates of training.

Resiliency Workshop
Hosted by mental health promotion representatives from Medicine Hat College and the Canadian Mental Health Association, this online, information-based workshop will present on the topic of resiliency. The session will include strategies to build a toolbox for mental strength and flexibility that you can use in the future, as well as opportunities for group discussion and questions surrounding the topic/skill of resiliency. We will also provide information on community-based resources within Medicine Hat.

LivingWorks START Training
CMHA-ASER is offering our community access to LivingWorks Start online suicide prevention program at no cost, thanks to funding from FCSS and the Government of Alberta (must be a resident of southeast Alberta).
LivingWorks Start is an online, skills-based suicide prevention training program that anyone can learn in as little as one hour. Accessible from any computer or mobile device, the program features realistic audiovisuals and powerful e-learning technology. It also offers customizable elements based on users’ profiles and needs, and provides quick access to support and safety resources. Trainees learn life-saving skills to keep their family members, friends, co-workers, and others safe from suicide.
LivingWorks Start teaches valuable skills to everyone 13 and older and requires no formal training or prior experience in suicide prevention
A limited number of registrations are available for community members of Southeast Alberta (Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bassano, Bow Island, Foremost, Irvine, Oyen and surrounding areas) at no cost.
If you are not from Southeast Alberta you can access this training for a cost from LivingWorks: www.livingworks.net/start.
How to enroll in this free training:
Register on Eventbrite between March 25th—April 8th, 2021 and you will receive an email enrolment from LivingWorks with a link providing access to this training on April 9th, 2021. You will then have 60 days to complete the training.

Recovery College: Art of Friendship
Strong friendships give us the power to be our true selves; when we have strong friendships, we feel respected and valued and we work hard to find ways to show our friends that we respect and value them. Strong friendships take work!
This 8-week course will help you learn about yourself, what you say, the way you act, and how all of your actions can affect relationships with others. Focusing on these aspects helps us gain confidence in our relationships and we will be more likely to achieve our friendship goals.

Recovery College: Confront the Discomfort
Whether we like it or not, anxiety and stress are a normal part of life, but they can also get in the way of us enjoying life. In this 3-session course, you will learn how to value, recognize, and respond with awareness to emotions by learning positive coping strategies through meditation and grounding techniques in order to support healing and growth.

Recovery College: Road to Recovery
The road to recovery is not an easy path. It is a journey of re-inventing how you think about yourself, your mental health, or substance use. Your recovery can be challenging!
Throughout this course, you will explore how to think and act in ways that move you towards a more meaningful life.

Recovery College: Whispers of Wellness
A group for people living with mental health issues. This is an open group, which means you can join at any time and you are not required to attend every meeting. WOW provides opportunities to learn more about coping with mental health issues while meeting people who have similar experiences.

Recovery College: Caregiver Connections
This drop-in, peer-to-peer family support group is for parents and caregivers of children or young adults experiencing a mental health concern or addiction.
This program offers compassionate support from a peer, who has "been there" as well as a CMHA staff member. Specific information and resources will be shared, which will assist you in your caregiving while maintaining your own mental health.

Recovery College: Hope & Healing After Suicide Loss
Losing a loved one to suicide can often leave us feeling confused, angry, and alone. This 9-week support group will provide you an opportunity to explore and share your feelings with others who have also experienced a loss due to suicide.
This group is offered two times a year: once in fall/winter and once in winter/spring.
